Chapter Sixteen

“JAY—?”

Something wet and warm trickled down my arm, and the pain in my shoulder increased to a steady throb of heat. I clutched my arm and brought my hand away covered in blood. I stared at my hand for a good minute before two and two clicked; I had been shot. Before I could react, there was another pop, and Jason was suddenly on me, tackling us to the ground. The bullet flew overhead and embedded into the concrete wall I’d held Maria against just seconds before.

Jason looked about frantically for the shooter, his body heavy against mine. My arm was starting to twitch from the pain.

“Jay, you’re hurting me,” I choked out.

He lifted himself up, taking me with him. “C’mon; we’re getting out of here.”

I held my shoulder and started to run after him but found it hard to move, my legs made of rubber. Leave it up to me to get shot twice in one week.

“Jay, I can’t…I feel…” My words slurred, vision blurring. I could feel my heart beating in my arm, the limb tingling like a million fire ants were under the skin.

“Fucking shit, it’s a silver shot?” Jason’s voice sounded so far away.

“Huuuhn?” I couldn’t even form a sentence, the haze blurring my vision solidifying until I couldn’t see a damn thing. I staggered forward, tripping over my own two feet, and slammed face-first onto the pavement.
